CENTRAL Highlands Football League will play against Ellinbank District Football League in its return to interleague competition next year.In what will be the league’s first interleague match in 15 years, the CHFL will travel to meet the west Gippsland-based football league on its home turf in May next year. Both sides will enter the match with little knowledge of their opponent, as both have not played interleague for years.CHFL has been ranked the 27th best league in country Victoria, as the VCFL interleague format continues to attract more leagues. The ranking system extends to 32 leagues this year, which has grown from a top-20 format last year.CHFL president Eddy Comelli said the league would almost go in blind against the Ellinbank District, which has not played representative football for six years.“It’s a bit of an unknown at this stage, we don’t know a lot about them,” he said. EDFL spokesman Peter Gallash said his league had been traditionally strong, before it opted against interleague football six years ago.He said it had won the last eight matches against surrounding leagues before pulling the pin. However the new ranking system enticed the league to return to representative football. With four VCFL players expected to represent the EDFL, Gallash said a “highly competitive” outfit would to take to the field. With a record amount of 32 leagues entered this year, the format has been divided into three divisions to give the lower ranked sides a chance at a division title. Teams ranked 1-10 will form division one, 11-20 will contest division two and the remaining teams will battle it out to try and reach the top of division three.Sides will play one match each year, with the loser to advance in the ranking system and the loser to drop back. All matches will be held on the last weekend of May, with the majority to be played on Saturday, May 27.Expression of interest for the CHFL coaching position are expected to open soon, as will the expressions for the position of team manager. The Maryborough and Castlemaine District Football league, which is in the same division as the CHFL, will clash with the Horsham District Football league.
