Melbourne indie darlings Ferla will perform at Karova Lounge this Thursday night, celebrating the release of their debut album in April.
The new record is called It's Personal, an apt name for the 80s-tinged synth-pop contained within, which drips with sentiment and insecurity. Singer and songwriter Giuliano Ferla said he had taken his emotions throughout a tumultuous year, including the end of long-term relationship, and turned out something "people could relate to".
"The whole ethos of the album was to try and get these experiences I've been having in isolation, these emotions and loneliness, and try and turn them into a collective experience," he said
"And my only barometer is when we play live shows, in Sydney and Canberra a bunch of strangers were singing along to the songs. I think that's an indication you're maybe telling the truth."
Calling it a "time of rebuilding", Ferla said he finally came to grips with being a musician in his early 30s and shaking off the self-doubt, across the two-year process of getting the album out.
"At the end of the day, I don't want to do anything else," he said.
