The team played Melbourne Victory to a nil-all draw at Morshead Park on Saturday.
The scoreline marked the best result in over three months for the club which had been on a 15-game losing streak.
Although disappointed not to have come away with a win, Ballarat City coach James Robinson said the team produced a fantastic effort.
"We went up a few layers both individually and collectively," he said.
"The boys stood tall for 95 minutes of the game, and that's been the challenge since day one, to produce a consistent full-match approach."
City controlled much of the contest against Victory, which is considered by some to be the best youth club in Victoria.
Ballarat came within inches of hitting the scoreboard on a number of occasions, but were also able to stand-up defensively at the other end.
Ballarat goalkeeper Ryan Schorback made some clinical saves for his club while the game hung in the balance.
Alex Baker and Daniel Tinker also stood tall in the back-line, while Jake Francis and Leighton Lauton were aggressive in attack.
Having conceded 52 goals so far this season, Robinson said his side was able to play a more attacking brand of football.
"We carried on, we were attacking, and we had them on the back foot and were very proactive," he said.
"It's a confidence boost for them to know that with a little bit of extra focus, these performances will become our default setting."
Ballarat trotted out a young side for the contest, with only two players exceeding 21 years of age.
Robinson believes if the club can foster the right environment, Ballarat City could become the development choice for Western Victorian players.
Coming off the draw, City will look ahead to this weekend's rematch against the Whittlesea Ranges.
It will be the first time the two clubs have met since their February encounter which saw Ballarat win 3-1.
Robinson said it would be a good test for his club against a Ranges outfit that had overhauled its list in the time since.
"The match against Whittlesea is going to be about finding that next step of consistency that we're looking for," Robinson said.
"From a holistic point of view, last week was a big step-up and we need to keep building on it."
