This will be the first season Ballarat's Daughters of the West will have a Bulldogs' leadership academy graduate involved in a support role for the program. Kate Healy, who is a photographer for The Courier, was one of 11 Sons and Daughters of the West participants from the region to sign up as a pack leader last year.
Ballarat's two Sons of the West programs each had leadership graduates involved in the men's programs, which finished in July. They helped to lift the profile of pathways the program can offer for community members.
Daughters of the West sessions will once again feature a fitness component, tailored to individual's abilities, and a health focus with experts from the region. Endometriosis, gender equity and alcohol cultures will come into play this season, adding to core topics on nutrition and mental health.
The Ballarat program, facilitated by Sport Central, is an all-female environment in a bid to encourage more women to get involved.
Daughters of the West taps into VicHealth's This Girl Can campaign which promotes more ways women can get moving without fear of judgement, breaking key barriers to females taking up or sticking with exercise.
Selected Ballarat Daughters of the West graduates had a chance to take part in a showcase for Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in their visit to Government House in Melbourne last October.
Daughters of the West will run at Phoenix Community College, Sebastopol campus in Hertford Street, on Wednesdays at 7pm. The 10-week program starts on August 21. Places are expected to fill quickly.
Sons and Daughters of the West are part of a suite of Western Bulldogs-led community programs in Ballarat, including the Bulldogs' youth leadership project and Ballarat exclusive Bulldogs Read children's literacy program.
Western Bulldogs will return to Mars Stadium for a round 23 clash against Adelaide late next month.
