The number of deaths on the state's roads is currently sitting at 191 - an increase of 43.6 per cent since this time last year.
Operation Argus is a statewide operation and is being conducted due to the significant increase in the number of lives lost on the state's roads this year. It will be implemented on a large-scale on Ballarat roads.
Ballarat Local Area Commander Ben Young said the safety blitz would build on the recent National Day of Action and Operation West Connect.
"This year has seen elevated trauma, particularly in our local area, which has devastating and extensive impacts on our community," he said.
"As police, community safety is always at the front of our minds and we are asking the community to make sure it is also at the front of theirs.
"It is frustrating when we continue to see unacceptable behaviours on our roads from a minority of the population that puts all of our road users at risk."
Watch Ballarat West's acting senior sergeant Stuart Gale speak about his frustration at driver behaviour.
The focus of the operation will be on drink and drug impaired drivers, motorcycle safety, excessive speed, driver distraction, fatigue and drivers and their passengers not wearing seatbelts.
All available police officers from local road policing and frontline units will be working on the operation.
"We all have a responsibility, not only to ourselves, but to each other, to take care," he said.
Police will be conducting Operation Argus from 12.01am Thursday morning until 11.59pm Sunday, September 8.
