The main location for the Ballarat Combined Charities Card Shop, which has sold Christmas cards and gifts for charity for more than three decades, will now be at the Lutheran Church on Doveton Street.
Volunteers approached church officials with the idea. They agreed to support the shop, which is a registered charity. A planning application is now with the City of Ballarat Council to allow the church hall to be used for retail purposes.
Pending planning approval, the shop will open for business at the end of September and operate all the way up to and beyond the festive season.
There will also be a pop up shop opening in the foyer of Ballarat Base hospital from November onward.
The charity was formed in 1988 and has opened annually in Ballarat since then.
THE NEW LOCATION:
Last year, there was a pop-up shop in 1A Eyre Street, a venue the charity had used for many years. However, United Tools, the business based at the address has since closed.
Denise Boyko is one of the organisers behind the card shop. She said that people family behind United Tools had been "very supportive" over the years, but their closure meant they needed to find a new venue.
She says with the two venues confirmed this year, things are looking busier than ever for the volunteers.
"We're getting ready to go this year," she told The Courier, adding that she had boxes of cards stored primed for sale to the public.
She said that while the final details of the charities the shop would support remain to be confirmed, many were likely to be the same as in previous years.
The Ballarat Soup Bus, Cancer Victoria, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Guide Dogs Victoria and Glaucoma Australia were among the charities supported last year.
- Ms Boyko said while they had a good bank of volunteers available, there was still room for more help. If anyone is interested in supporting the card shop this year, they can contact Denise directly on 0400 186 136.
