Golden Plains council is leading the charge for a new football and netball entity within the shire.
Following the well-documented demise of Smythesdale in recent times, a section of the region has been left without a local club.
Council hosted a community forum in Smythesdale on Wednesday night where a small gathering of people turned up to discuss what options might be available.
The principle focus of council is to develop a junior base in the north of the shire.
Golden Plains' recreation development officer Brodie Marston said the loss of Smythesdale as a club had left quite a void in the community.
"Given that we have a number of schools and a lot of families in that catchment area through Haddon, Ross Creek, Linton and obviously Smythesdale, we felt it was really important to try and establish some kind of opportunity for young people - children in particular - to still be able to pursue football and netball and sporing activities," Marston said.
"And also try and create again a social environment where people can feel connected to their community."
Marston said it was time to explore something a little bit bigger than just the Smythesdale Football Netball Club, which won't be fielding any teams in season 2020.
"At the moment, people are obviously having to participate in the City of Ballarat or other areas to get those opportunities," Marston said.
Marston said the current efforts were all based around junior football and netball, but hoped that on the back of this work Smythesdale FNC might be able to re-establish itself in the future.
"...potentially there's a pathway opportunity for this (new) club to feed into there (Smythesdale), but at the moment our sole focus is on establishing opportunities for children and young people," he told The Courier.
Marston was present at Wednesday night's meeting where close to 20 people turned up to begin discussion around the formation of a new club.
Representatives from organisations Sports Central and Netball Victoria were among those present and people committed to being part of a working party which will continue focusing on the club's formation.
