The driver in his early 20s, was heading towards Ballarat when his car has veered onto the other side of the road, taking out a tree.
He was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital with only minor injuries.
Police at the scene said the driver had been fortunate that the tree was not as big as some of the others in the area.
"These trees can be very unforgiving, so he's incredibly lucky with the tree that he has hit. It could have been a lot worse," police said.
"We're still investigating the exact cause and we'll have a chat once the driver is okay to do so."
The driver was the only occupant of the car and the car was the only vehicle involved in the incident.
The clean up is expected to take some time and drivers are asked to take care if driving towards Cardigan this morning.
