Parts of Ballarat-Carngham Road will be closed between Dyson Drive and Learmonth Road for three weeks, beginning Monday.
The area is undergoing utilities works while new estate developments are installed.
Electronic signs warning drivers of the traffic changes are on-site - non-local traffic should avoid the area during construction.
An alert on the VicTraffic website states lanes will be closed in both directions between 6.30am and 6pm on weekdays and weekends.
"Note that changed conditions may also be in place during 6pm to 6.30am," it states.
"Altered speed limit during operation will be 80 (km/h) and the traffic delay is expected to be 0 to 5 min."
The alert states works should be completed by November 8.
The City of Ballarat referred enquiries to Regional Roads Victoria, which was contacted for comment but did not respond by deadline.
The road will also be affected by construction works as part of the state government's $60 million planned upgrades to several intersections across Ballarat.
Specifically, the Dyson Drive intersection at Ballarat-Carngham Road will become a two-lane, four-legged roundabout.
The new set of traffic lights at the Learmonth Road-Wiltshire Lane intersection with Ballarat-Carngham Road will replace the current roundabout.
These are separate to the current works, and the start time is not yet known.
The state government has promised the first six intersections will be complete within three years, with work to begin in 2020.
It follows other roadworks across town, with intersections near secondary schools on Sturt Street currently being upgraded.
Further Sturt Street upgrades, including more traffic lights and safety improvements, will begin soon and continue into next year.

Other places where roadworks are occurring, according to VicTraffic, include Mair Street, Fussell Street near Woodmans Hill Seconday College, Princess Street and Victoria Street's service lane in Ballarat East, and the Gillies Street intersection with Gregory Street West in Wendouree.
Drivers should slow down around roadworks, even when there are no workers nearby, due to unpredictable changed conditions.
