A man has suffered life threatening injuries after a homemade pipe gun exploded at a property near Maryborough yesterday.

Police were called to the scene in Talbot Road, Majorca, at about 6pm.

A neighbour heard a distinct explosion at the time, assuming it to be either the discharge of a shotgun, a gas bottle explosion or a tree falling.

Shortly after and number of police and ambulance vehicles arrived at the white weatherboard house on the corner of Talbot and Commercial Roads, as locals gathered.

The Ambulance Victoria helicopter landed in the Majorca Historic Reserve soon after.

Enquiries about the occupant's condition were not addressed by police.

Majorca is about 14km south of Maryborough.

A Victoria Police spokesman said a 41-year-old man was flown to hospital following the incident.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man suffered serious injuries and was flown to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
