The Judicial College of Victoria delivered its second multi-disciplinary training ahead of the start of Ballarat's Specialist Family Violence Court in mid-November.
On Friday, about 80 participants from the city's family violence services, police, lawyers and court staff attended the unique training program, which focused on inclusion and equity in the specialist court.
The program was designed to help individuals and organisations to improve their understanding of how family violence is experienced across diverse communities.
Grampians region lead family violence magistrate Noreen Toohey said it was important all sectors working within the Specialist Family Violence Court understood people had different backgrounds and cultures.
She said the diverse range of people who may use the court included people with disabilities, people experiencing elder abuse, Indigneous people, adolescents and LGBTI people.
"The whole focus is how can you best make a safe space for people and how can you assist them in telling you what the issues are," Ms Toohey said.
"Do they need an interpreter, is it the right language? It doesn't matter what sector you are dealing with - Ballarat Community Health, the police, WRISC or Berry Street - they have to understand where those people are coming from."
Ms Toohey said everyone working at the specialist court had a role to play and understanding and listening to the court user made a difference to how they approached them.
"As our year goes by, each person becomes aware of the issues. If you have more services to address the issues, that means you can reduce family violence in the community," she said.
The Judicial College of Victoria will deliver the third and final multi-disciplinary training session in November. It aims to develop and strengthen partnerships in multi-disciplinary practice.
