OKLAHOMA!
Set in Oklahoma, it tells a story of farmers and cowhands, intermixing a love story with tragedy and humour. We meet Laurey, a pretty young girl, and the two men that love her, the clean-cut Curly and the more sinister Jud Fry; and the more light-hearted trio of Ado Annie and her two suitors, Will Parker, and salesman, Ali Hakim.
The music represents some of the very best of Rodgers and Hammerstein including the title song
Marty Grimwood as Curly is a newcomer to Ballarat and an excellent find for this production which is his first musical in over 20 years.
Marty is best known for his ongoing role in
Prue Bell as Laurey gives a controlled performance with some beautiful singing and acting.
Aunt Eller, the mainstay of the show, was given a wonderful portrayal by Vicki Rowe, who captured the essence of a character respected by farmers and cow folk alike.
Rob Muirhead as the cowboy Will Parker is a future star, and Maddi Craven, as Ado Annie, is equally impressive. Both worked well together, with plenty of energy.
Farmhand Jud Fry, played by Brendan Bawden, represented the dark side of the story. Bawden is a good actor and singer.
