Emergency services were called to East Terrace in Mt Helen just prior to 7am after reports black smoke was seen billowing out of a building at the State Library archives centre.
Units from Ballarat, Buninyong and Sebastopol arrived at the scene to discover the smoke was being caused by a mechanical failure with the diesel pump at the building's pump centre.
A Ballarat City CFA spokesperson told The Courier once power to the diesel pump was cut, the smoke subsided and no damage was caused to the building.
