The Renegades find themselves fifth with four games remaining after a six-run loss to Brisbane Heat on Wednesday.
For the visitors, the Stars, it is a much different scenario in what has been a disappointing season so far with just the one win and bottom position.
The Renegades need to chase down the likes of Sydney Sixers (third) and Perth Scorchers (fourth), which are just one win better off to play finals.
The Renegades' remaining games after the Stars are against Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Stars again and Sydney Thunder.
The Renegades open a two-day stay in Ballarat with a coaching clinic at the Eastern Oval on Friday.
Saturday's program includes a Greater Western Under-17 Challenge as the curtain-raiser at 10am.
The WBBL twenty20 clash begins at 2pm. Gates open at 9.30am, with admission free.
