Kyle Van Gils, 22, pleaded guilty to two charges of drug driving at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The court heard Van Gils was intercepted on the Princes Highway in Colac on July 21 and an analysis of his oral fluid showed the presence of methamphetamine.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac said police pulled over Van Gils on a second occasion on July 31 on Albert Street in Sebastopol for a random licence check.
An analysis of his oral fluid again showed the presence of methamphetamine.
Van Gils told police he had taken methamphetamine at his house the previous week.
A Ballarat defence lawyer said Van Gils was a 'recreational user' of methamphetamine during the time he had worked as a plasterer.
The lawyer said Van Gils was now looking to change career and was living with his mother.
"The thing about meth use is most people wreck their lives by starting off saying they use it recreationally," Magistrate Ron Saines told the court in his sentencing remarks.
"If you were to spend a week in this court room you would see people in and out of jail who started with meth use recreationally just like you.
"It is a fine thing to see you are trying to address your issues."
Van Gils was fined a total of $1550 and ordered to pay $127.40 in court costs.
He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
