Christmas cheer is the Creswick way for Laurie and Dot
For a man who spent much of his life working in sawmills, Laurie Porter isn't in any way hard of hearing, and a sound he loves is the happy laughter of children.
Laurie and his wife Dot have gone to enormous efforts for the past five years to make a Christmas wonderland in their front yard, and this year tops them all, says Laurie, with a snowmaking machine to boot.
The Creswick couple have lived in their Ballarat Road home for seven years, and it's now a local landmark during the festive season. Laurie began setting his Christmas scenes up in October, and now the weather has warmed the crowds are coming.
"On Monday we had the last two buses come through at half-past 11," Laurie says, " and we don't turn the lights on until 9 or 10 o'clock.
Dot and Laurie say the effort is worth the pleasure it brings them and others, although Christmas is 'a much bigger deal' than it was in their childhood.
"I remember only getting one present!" Dot says.
Laurie Porter says 2019 is the biggest year they've done so far.
Laurie, who turned 79 on Monday, says the only thing he isn't allowed to do these days is climb up on the roof to add the decorations to the gutters and aerial. Everything else, including the design and sourcing, is down to him and Dot, who have been married for 54 years.
"It makes the kids happy - and the adults too, don't worry about that!"
