Richards, of Aintree near Rockbank, has performed well in the event over the past two years.
However, on each occasion she has had to settle for third in the final.
She will be aiming to repeat her winning effort in last year's Ballarat Women's Gift.
Richards runs off 9.25m in the last of six heats.
Holly Dobbyn, of Ballarat, has the back mark in the event with 2.5m. She lines up in heat four.
Clare De Salis (4.75m) will be looking to repeat her performance of Wednesday, when she reached the Maryborough women's 120m sprint final.
