Detective Sergeant Steve Howard of Ballarat DRU said the lone male offender entered a business at Humffray Street South just after midnight on January 1.
Forcing open the front door, he entered the building and proceeded to punch a Christmas tree before searching the premises. After locating a number of Christmas gifts and alcohol in an office area, the man departed.
Detective Sergeant Howard said police suspected the man was drug affected.
Investigators don't believe that he is a local.
The damage to the door as well as the value of what was stolen is estimated to have been in the vicinity of $600.
The owners of the building have since upgraded their alarm and CCTV systems.
Investigators have released CCTV images of the man who may be able to assist with their enquiries.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Ballarat DRU at Ballarat West Police Station or to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
