However, the guard was confident he would be back in time to suit up for the Ballarat Miners at the start of the NBL1 season in April.
Short suffered a rib injury during training last Friday which will see him sidelined for up to four to six weeks. It comes a week before Melbourne United is set to face the Sydney Kings in the first round of the NBL playoffs.
"I fractured my rib cartilage under my sternum during training," he said.
"Unfortunately I'm going to be out for a little bit of time and I won't be featuring in finals at all."
Short is in the third year of a development contract with United, which expires at the end of the season.
Earlier in the season, he hit the scoreboard for the first time in his NBL career, dropping five points in five minutes of action. He re-signed with the Ballarat Miners in January.
