A 22-year-old man is fighting for his life after smashing into a tree at high speed along Remembrance Drive at Cardigan.

The crash occurred near the Gleno Court intersection just before 9am, in what is a straight stretch of road.
It is understood the driver was ejected from the vehicle and the tree snapped in half.
He is being airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
The car is an early 2000s model Holden Commodore.
Speaking at the scene, Acting Sergeant Matthew Rhodes said police were increasingly frustrated about the continuous crashes along the avenue.
"At this stage we're still conducting our investigation as to what has occurred, but it is evident that it's a high-speed collision of some kind," he said.
"We don't understand why this is the case (of another crash on Remembrance Drive).
"It's a straight stretch, people know the speed limits, you can't overtake, there's trees either side."

The issue of safety along the Avenue of Honour has long been a contentious issue.
There has been discussion around installing wire rope barriers, however the close proximity of the trees to the road have rendered that idea almost impossible.

The speed limit is soon going to be changed further along the road, at Cardigan Village, following a fatality at the Madden Road intersection in 2018.
A four-year-old girl was killed just a few hundred metres down the road in April 2016, while a man was killed in a truck crash in October 2016.
