A RAIL equipment fault near Melton is causing major delays on the Ballarat train line this morning.

Delays of up to an hour are to be expected on the line throughout the morning.
Most peak hour trains were affected with delays of up to 30 minutes with many terminating in Melton prior with replacement buses needed to the city.
The hold-up comes just one day after V/Line spruiked its second successive month of solid performance figures, although there was a slight drop in punctuality and reliability in February.
The statistics showed a 92.8 per cent reliability on the Ballarat, but the punctuality fell to 89.9 per cent.
The punctuality is determined on trains arriving and departing withing five minutes and 59 seconds of the scheduled time.
The Ararat and Maryborough lines showed a 95.8 per cent reliability and a 93.9 per cent punctuality.
