With uncertainty as how many, if any, NBL 1 games will be played in 2020 owing to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, Basketball Ballarat has decided to put all its energy and resources into the sport at domestic level.
Basketball Ballarat chief executive officer Peter Eddy said as tough as the call was - he described it as the most difficult he had been part of in 30 years in basketball administration - the board was comfortable with it.
He said the decision was made in the best interests of the physical and mental well-being of all athletes, members, supporters, staff, volunteers and match officials during this unprecedented global health pandemic.
Eddy said the organisation's priority was to nurture and foster basketball as grassroots level, and provide pathways.
"Domestic basketball - that's our first priority.
"Over the upcoming weeks and months, we will be prioritising working extremely closely with our member clubs, players, officials and families to ensure that we re-establish the sport of basketball within our community from the grassroots level up."
Eddy said Basketball Ballarat was also committed to ensuring its business remained viable and staff retained jobs.
Basketball Ballarat has closed its two stadiums, the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre and Minerdome, in the wake of coronavirus.
National and state junior basketball championships, and a Super Netball pre-season game between Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood, all planned to be played at the new multi-million dollar BSEC, have also been called off along with domestic basketball and netball competitions.
Eddy said making the decision now gave the whole NBL1 situation clarity.
He said everyone involved now knew where they stood.
The NBL1 south conference was originally scheduled to on Saturday, April 18, but earlier this week it was pushed back to at least May 15.
