In its daily briefing, the City of Ballarat has this afternoon announced the Ballarat Animal Shelter will officially close to the public "until further notice".
The collection and release of stray pets will continue to operate while people who find stray animals are asked to still call the ranger.
At the weekend, the shelter put out a social media post asking for Ballarat residents to get in touch who were interested in becoming 'foster parents'.
"If you have a spare room away from pre-existing pets, time to commit short term and have a lot of love to give you would be the perfect candidate," the shelter said on social media on March 27.
"Our foster program is now more important than ever and if we band together we could make a difference to a lot of little lives.
"We have plenty of dogs, cats, mother cats and kittens, litters of kittens and sick cats that require medication daily and a lot of extra TLC.
In a statement this afternoon, the City of Ballarat said a large amount of animals had found new homes in recent weeks
"We are very thankful for your ongoing support of the shelter and our resident animals," it said.
"Our team will continue to work with the animals in our care. Keep an eye out at the Ballarat Animal Shelter Facebook page for more information as it becomes available."
