Senior Meteorologist Christie Johnson said some of the highest rainfalls totals had exceeded 60-70mm in some parts of the state and there was more on the way, with snow falling as low as 1100m
"Thunderstorms are possible over eastern Victoria this afternoon with that overnight rain band moving through, but we will also see some isolated showers in central and western Victoria," Ms Johnson said.
"Friday will start off quite nicely but we'll see showers develop over the west in the early afternoon, into central districts in later afternoon."
A cool change will likely hit the Ballarat region in the early evening.
"Behind the cold front will be much colder air, a wild, wet and windy weekend. We should see some storms and some hail. We might also see snow over the weekend depending on how much rain falls," she said.
"We expect snow to 1100m by Saturday night and Sunday morning but it will only be for a short time.
"We are expecting very strong winds and it will feel very cold Saturday and Sunday. The strongest winds will be on Sunday and that could see a severe weather warning issued."
So maybe this weekend will be a great time to be indoors afterall.
