Designs for the work on the corner of Wendouree Parade with Colpin Avenue are currently being advertised on the City of Ballarat planning website.
The plans show that the existing house, which lies at the north end of the lake just south of Gregory Street and Howitt Street, would be extended across the width of the property.
The plans were submitted by Melbourne-based town planner Jewell Partnership, who wrote: "Our clients seek to modernise the building to contemporary living standards in a 'low impact' manner.
"The design successfully blends the new and established in a manner which advantages the immediate neighbourhood character."
It would become a four-bedroom house with a back terrace, while the area facing Wendouree Parade would be designed by a landscape gardener, leaving the house frontage "enhanced", according to the town planner.
In documents included in the application, planners say the works would maintain the traditional scale of developments in the area, as well as complement existing buildings and retain "existing garden character".
An existing colorbond fence would be replaced by a brick pier and steel picket fence.
Under the plans, an existing brick garage at the corner of the property would be demolished, as well as much of the back of the existing three-bedroom house.
The front of the building may not look too noticeably different once complete with planners saying "most of the building fabric visible from the street" would be retained.
The application states: "The building extensions renews the present structure and provides for greatly enhanced future liveability. This is done in a respectful manner."
The crossover that currently goes onto Wendouree Parade would be also removed, with a new vehicle access instead leading to a newly installed garage off Colpin Avenue.
The residence dates back to the early 1960s and was purchased by its current owners in 2015.
The area surrounding Lake Wendouree has seen a steady stream of ambitious building projects over the past few years.
