UPDATED, TUESDAY 6.30am
A Ballarat man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a shocking alleged daylight shooting in Wendouree on Monday afternoon.
Armed Crime Squad detectives arrested the 49-year-old Ballarat man in Melton Monday evening.
He has been charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, prohibited possession of a firearm and reckless conduct endangering life.
He has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
His name has not been released.
The charges follow a shooting incident outside a Clover Street address in which a 25-year-old Wendouree man was seriously injured on Monday 20 April about 3pm.
He remains in a serious condition in hospital.
EARLIER, MONDAY NIGHT
A man has been airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries after he was allegedly shot in the face in broad daylight.
Police were called to Clover Street, Wendouree, about 3pm on Monday following reports of a gunshot - it's understood a man was shot outside a residential house in the front yard.
The 25-year-old man was rushed to Ballarat Base Hospital with serious upper body injuries, where he was later airlifted.
No arrests had been made as of Monday night, Victoria Police Media confirmed.
Detectives from the Victoria Police Armed Crime Taskforce arrived within hours from Melbourne to examine the scene.
A Victoria Police spokesperson issued a statement noting the investigation was ongoing, and urged any witnesses to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with information.
"Investigators have been told a man was shot outside a Clover Street address about 3pm," they said.
"The man sustained serious injuries during the incident and was transported to hospital."
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting and any potential suspects are not clear at time of publication.
It is not yet known if police currently have a suspect, the type of firearm used, or how the shooting occurred.
Witnesses in the area told The Courier they heard a "loud bang".
One woman said she was helping her daughter with school work at home when the incident occurred.
"We were sitting together looking at her work and then there was this really loud bang," she said. "She asked me what it was and I immediately thought it sounded like a gun had gone off."
Some witnesses on the street also told The Courier they saw and heard a small black car speed away from the scene after the shooting.
"I just looked out the window and saw (the car) fly down the street," another woman said.
A third person, understood to be a neighbour, said on social media the scene was "utterly horrible" to witness.
Investigators took witness statements from several people in the neighbourhood.
Clover Street is a relatively quiet residential street near Learmonth Road that only stretches for a few hundred metres, and includes a small children's playground.
The street remained closed into the night with police tape as the Armed Crime Taskforce began their work investigating the scene.
Taskforce members declined to comment or give further detail at the scene, referring enquiries to Police Media.
A Royal Melbourne Hospital spokesperson confirmed the man arrived at the hospital in a serious condition.
Anyone with information about the shooting should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
