Australian College of Midwives president Terri Barrett saluted midwives the nation over.
"2020 has brought many unexpected challenges to our nation with fires, floods and now, the COVID-19 pandemic that is impacting on us all in so many ways.
"As a profession we have much to be proud of as we have continued to provide the best possible care to mothers and babies," she said.
" ... the challenges have not only been professional but also personal and despite your own situations you have continued to put the needs of mothers and babies central to your actions."
This year's theme is "Midwives with women: celebrate, demonstrate, mobilise, unite - our time is NOW."
"We are hopeful that the positive signs in Australia in relation to COVID-19 will see life normalise somewhat over the next few months."
The World Health Organisation has made 2020 the International Year of the Midwife and the Nurse. For the first time, countries across the world will unite in recognition of the essential role that midwives play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage.
