Lake safety first
An interesting point of view put by Judith Bailey about progressing the lighting around Lake Wendouree. We have in fact had an ongoing trial of two types of lighting around the south-west edge of the Lake for around twenty years. One of these is a very welcome oasis of light on these very dark mornings. In running the lake 4 to 5 times a week for the last 40 years I have not observed any change in wild life numbers or behaviour with or without lighting.

More of the "taller" types of lights would be welcomed in strategic darker places along the Lake trail to improve the safety for the many walkers and runners whose work hours mean they must exercise in the dark for at least six months of the year.
Headlamps could be suggested I'm sure but they are an absolute hazard to on-coming exercisers. I am one of the early morning brigade who look forward to the installation of more lighting some time before I'm called to the great running trail in the sky.

Poor App design
Regarding Mr Morrison's message (Courier 5/5) urging us all to download the CIVIDSafe App, there are several problems which particularly effect we vulnerable elderly.
Many of us do not see the need to regularly update our mobile devices. One device in my household, which we hope will serve us for many more years, cannot download the App because its version of Android is too old.
Many other Apps can be still installed, so I cannot understand why COVIDSafe was not designed to accommodate older devices.
The only way both of us can be COVIDSafe is to spend several hundred dollars upgrading, an expense we would prefer to avoid at a time when our retirement funds have substantially diminished overnight. Also, the elderly do not always carry our devices whenever we leave home. It is just not part of our lifestyle to do so, and old habits are hard to shake.

Eyesore Billboard
I am very disappointed that the council has referred the planning to VCAT. Objections require lodgement together with a significant fee such that most people will not choose to lodge an objection. The matter should have been the subject of community discussion. As Peter Kervarec has demonstrated the sign will significantly detract from the streetscape even with the restrictions placed by council.
