IT'S been 10 years since Ballarat saw such a sustained run of cold nights in May, but even then it was broken up by the odd warmer temperature.

While most of us remain tucked up in bed in the early mornings, there are some brave morning souls that are continuing to exercise before dawn.
Those will have noticed the distinct chill in the air, which has seen temperatures hover around zero, or even below, for almost a week.
On four of the past five nights, Ballarat overnight low temperatures have dropped below freezing, with only one night staying just above zero, coming in a 0.4.
And another cold night is expected tonight, with a forecast of 1 degree again before cloud rolls in later tomorrow, keeping the overnight temperature at a positively balmy seven degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Michael Halfpenny said the cold nights have been caused by a high pressure system which has parked itself over Victoria.
"We've had a large high pressure system over Victoria for five days," Mr Halfpenny said.
"It's been in contrast to all the low pressure we've had recently, and it's seen a period of much more settled weather which has allowed the clear nights and not much wind.
"The number of days is probably unusual for this time of year. Albury for example has had nine nights below five and that hasn't happened since 2012."
In Ballarat, you have to go all the way back to 2010 to find an even slightly comparable event in May.
In that month from May 15-23, we saw a nine day period of mostly cold nights, although three of those nights saw temperatures hover above two degrees, and one even reached 4.2 degrees.
The five most recent nights, have all all been more than five degrees below the monthly average of 5.6 degrees. The average overnight low for the month to date has been just four degrees.
And despite the mostly sunny conditions, overall the month has been colder than usual as well.
Right now, Ballarat has averaged 13 degrees for the month, slightly down on the normal 13.9.
Make the most of the sunny weather over the next day or so, with cloud expected to roll in within the next 48 hours.
A cold front will bring up to 10mm of rain late on Tuesday night and also on Wednesday and the real cold will return on Thursday with a top of just nine degrees expected before it slightly warms up into the weekend, heading for 13 on Sunday.
