The flexible barriers have become state government policy in recent with the government claiming they have saved dozens of lives on our roads.
Roads, Road Safety and TAC Minister Jaala Pulford said the $3.45 million upgrade would install barriers along both the road side and the centre median strip of the freeway along a region between Ballarat-Burrumbeet Road and the Midland Highway.
Ms Pulford said In the five-years to July 2019, five people were seriously injured, and two people lost their lives on this stretch of road which is travelled on b y more than 17,000 vehicles each day.
"We want everyone to be making safe choices when they're driving but sometimes mistakes happen - safety barriers are all about making our roads more forgiving when they do, reducing the risk of head-on and run-off-road crashes," Ms Pulford said.
The works are expected to be completed by September.
