As part of a $31 million Safer Communities Fund, the City of Ballarat will receive the funding to upgrade the notorious bus precinct.
Victorian senator Sarah Henderson said the Safer Communities Fund aimed to address the issues of crime and anti-social behaviour with a series of security initiatives. She said the funding will go toward the 'City Plaza Transport Hub Safety Project' and includes the installation of 10 CCTV cameras, 25 security lights and 15 security bollards.
Ms Henderson said the area in Ballarat had been crying out for upgrades for a long time.
"This grant will provide essential security upgrades which will make central Ballarat safer and more accessible to local residents including families," she said.
"This grant is a credit to Ballarat City Council which is working hard to improve community safety."
"As the Morrison Liberal government's representative in the Ballarat electorate, I am delighted with this news. Our government regards community safety as a key priority.
"This grant demonstrates our government's strong commitment to investing in the livability of regional Victorian cities like Ballarat."
Ballarat federal MP Catherine King said she was thrilled that Ballarat had received the "well deserved funding" which was sorely needed.
"While the vast majority of our community do the right thing, there will always be a small minority who don't," she said.
"Unfortunately, the actions of this small minority mean that some in our community can be made to feel unsafe, particularly when using public transport alone or at night."
"This grant will go a long way towards making Ballarat's public transport safer for everyone in our community. I am sure that the City of Ballarat will make the most of this funding to make improvements that deter any anti-social behaviour that does occur and enable more people to use our city's public transport with greater confidence."
