He led North Ballarat Roosters to their first flag in 2008 - the first of three consecutive premierships.
The VFL life member also coached in another three VFL grand finals, as well as coaching the VFL representative side and going on to a coaching games record.
FitzGerald embarked on a career coaching path after a serious knee injury ended his VFL/AFL career with Geelong after three games.
Not only was it a physical setback, FitzGerald says the disappointment of his Geelong dream coming to an end caused him to suffer what is now regarded as mental illness.
He said in those days you were left to deal with any issues of this type on your own.
