A man who allegedly fled a crash which left a car hanging over the Yarrowee River in central Ballarat was arrested and is now assisting police.
Victoria Police Media confirmed Ballarat police are investigating the incident - investigators were called after a car lost control and crashed into the bridge on Eastwood Street around 7.50pm on Friday night.
A 27-year-old Ballarat woman and a 20-year-old Ballarat woman, who were passengers in the car, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A 31-year-old Ballarat man who fled the scene and was arrested a short distance away is assisting police with their enquiries.
The car came to rest on a metal girder above the river which appears to hold utilities, and was leaking oil into the water below.
The car was removed from the bridge by crane about 9.30pm, and police immediately began searching the wreckage.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
The City of Ballarat has been contacted for comment regarding the structural integrity of the bridge - temporary fencing was seen on Saturday morning.
