Henderson's 2020 campaign was cut short by a knee injury and he made the decision to retire after the club's season ended.
The Trentham product, who had a basketball background in Ballarat, played 90 games for Adelaide after being taken in the 2009 rookie draft and was then delisted at the end of the 2016 season.
After that, he was picked up by Hawthorn as a delisted free agent. He played 69 games with the Hawks, including seven this season.
"Since the moment I arrived, I loved the change Hawthorn provided and the environment at the club," Henderson, 32, told hawthornfc.com.au.
"I'm really pleased to have been able to spend the last few years of my AFL career in the brown and gold.
"I'm happy to be moving into a new chapter of life and look forward to whatever comes next."
