Christopher Condon, 31, will argue he was acting in self-defence when the incident occurred at a Darley house on May 1.
Police allege Condon verbally abused his mother and nephew and grabbed his mother's wrist in an intoxicated state. His mother broke free of his grip and ran next door to call police.
Condon went to his room where he allegedly put on a belt with a knife and grabbed a wrought iron doorstop before going outside to the neighbour's house.

He allegedly approached the neighbour and said 'I am going to f*ck you up' before allegedly swinging the wrought iron doorstop at the neighbour and hitting him in the head.
It is alleged the victim grabbed Condon in defence and they wrestled on the ground, when Condon hit his head again and stabbed him with the knife.
The nephew managed to disarm Condon and the victim held him down until police arrived.
Eight police officers, four medical workers and four civilian witnesses are expected to give evidence for the prosecution case.
The two-day contested hearing will be held in April at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court.
Defence barrister Jo Swiney said on Wednesday the matter would be brought to court earlier if it resolved.
Condon appeared at court via a video link from prison for a special mention on Wednesday.
