The Demons announced the decision on their website this week, with the former St Patrick's College student now on the hunt for a new home.
McDonald, 24, was drafted to Melbourne via the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 53 in the 2014 national draft. He made his debut late in the 2015 season and went on to find a regular spot in the senior team's defence.
"Oscar has been a popular member of the footy club over the past six years and we would like to thank him for his valuable contributions," general manager of football facilities and administration Josh Mahoney told Melbourne Media.
"Letting players go at this time of the year is always challenging, but we wish Oscar all the best for the future."
McDonald was a big part of the club's successful 2018 season which culminated in a preliminary final defeat.
