Child and Family Services Ballarat raised the flag on its Lydiard Street base to celebrate Transgender Awareness Week and the organisation is encouraging other workplaces to also take action.
Cafs employee Sage Akouri said it was important that in offering an essential service, Cafs also make clear it was a supportive and inclusive space. Sage said to raise the flag was a momentous occasion but also a chance for Ballarat to say this was a welcoming place.
"It's so important in regional Victoria to have more representation...There's not a lack of transgender and gender diverse people in regional Victoria but a lack of transvisibility," Sage said.
"Raising the flag provides lifesaving visibility to the transgender and gender diverse community.
"I think this is important, especially to young people living in regional Victoria, to see a message of hope and possibility."

Cafs chief executive officer Wendy Sturgess said it was important for everyone to feel welcome, safe and secure when accessing services and businesses. Cafs earned its Rainbow Tick accreditation in 2019 for a commitment to inclusion and diversity.
"Transgender and gender diverse people often feel judged when accessing facilities, businesses or health services, which can prevent them from receiving the levels of service they are entitled to and deserve," Ms Sturgess said.
"Cafs wants to help break down those barriersbarriers, and flying the transgender flag is a visible way to show our organisation's support for this community. We want the TGD community to know they are warmly welcome here.
"Whether it's learning about correct pronouns, displaying messages of support or flying the transgender flag, Cafs would love to see more organisations showing their support."
