But they're not sure exactly what it will be.
"I imagine for that kind of money it will be building upgrades and maybe some new furniture - we'd love new furniture as we just had to get second-hand furniture from another school," said principal Jenny Dyer.
Ms Dyer said an arts-science room would also be high on the wish list because activities were currently completed on a porch clad with plastic blinds that is freezing in winter and boiling in summer.
Buninyong MP Michaela Settle visited the school on Friday to share news of the $1.978 million funding to upgrade and modernise the school.
"Michaela Settle rang on Thursday and said can you be at the fence at 11am with two representatives as I've got an announcement to make.
"I thought perhaps it was money for a new playground so I didn't think much about it ... but when she announced it I was shocked and the kids went dead silent, then some of the staff were crying and the kids shouted yippee."

"The kids are so excited they are so used to having old things, that's their normal."
Ms Dyer said the school recently had to get rid of 90 per cent of their books because they were old and yellow, and had two fundraising drives to buy new books.
"This is a great opportunity for Linton Primary. The school will now work through the best way to invest these funds to upgrade and modernise their school," Ms Settle said.
