Powercor has reported that power has now been returned to all customers after crews investigated and rectified the cause of the fault.
Crews had been working to restore power to homes and businesses following the cable fault in Ballarat that cut power about 1pm, a Powercor spokesperson said.
"We were able to restore power to most of the 5000 impacted customers within 10 minutes, with the reminder restored throughout the afternoon," he said.
"We thank customers for their patience as our crews worked to restore power as safely and as quickly as possible, and we have kept them updated on restoration times via SMS and our website."
UPDATE, 2.30pm: Just 235 homes and businesses remain without power.
Although the numbers have fluctuated greatly during the afternoon, Powercor's website now confirms 254 customers in Alfredton have lost power and just one at Lake Wendouree.
Powercor still estimates power should be restored by 3.30pm.
EARLIER: Almost 880 homes and businesses are without power across Ballarat.
According to Powercor, 847 customers are without power in Alfredton, 21 in Delacombe, eight in Newington and just one in Lake Wendouree.
At 1pm the electricity supplier listed 5659 customers being without power (with 4396 in Alfredton, 1082 in Lucas, 172 in Delacombe, eight in Newington and just one in Lake Wendouree).
Powercor continues to investigate the outages but hopes to have power restored by 3.30pm.
The power outages follow a massive storm that hit Alfredton on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction - flattening fences, upending letterboxes and tearing metal sheeting from roofs.
