East Ballarat might be number one - just - in the Ballarat Cricket Association firsts competition, but captain Josh Brown is far from satisfied.
While the Hawks are firmly entrenched in the top six, Brown is eager to see his players capitalise on what they have achieved so far and stay in the leadership position.
And he sees the key to that being improvement with the bat.
The Hawks have had a tough stretch against quality opposition - getting over Wendouree in the last game before the mid-season break, losing to Mt Clear and then having to really work hard to defeat Darley on a testing wicket.
Two out of three is a tick, but in that sequence no one has reached 50 and that is a concern for Brown, especially coming up against the likes of Golden Point as it is at the Eastern Oval on Saturday.
Brown said player were getting starts - 30s and 40s - but needed to go on with it and get 50s.
He said everyone was aware of it and continued to work on it.
While not offering it as an excuse, Brown said he believed East was better equipped for two-day matches and some adjustment had been required.
Golden Point has shown some good signs in the past few rounds to get back into the top six, but it also has plenty of work to do yet.
In contrast to East Ballarat, Point does have players getting match-winning scores.
NORTH Ballarat and Wendouree face off at the Northern Oval in what could easily be a taste of what is to come in finals.
The Red Caps have put together some formidable totals of late and they are going to be hard to stop again even with the likes Ash McCafferty firing down thunderbolts at them.
North came up well short of expectations in a shock loss to Brown Hill and the Roosters cannot afford to drop another one as the mid-table tightens up.
BALLARAT-REDAN meets Darley at Alfredton is a must-win for each team. Neither has won since the break and need to turn around their fortunes.
The Two Swords are still just percentage outside the top six, but need some big scalps, such as the Lions.
BROWN HILL gets a real chance to get back-to-back wins against Napoleons-Sebastopol and Buninyong will need to find something extra against Mt Clear.
