The Mounties brought up a third consecutive win in a rain-impacted shortened match against Buninyong on Saturday to overtake East Ballarat.
As well as Mt Clear has been playing, it has been the loss of form by East Ballarat which has led to the change of the top.
The Hawks suffered another batting failure, this time against Golden Point at the Eastern Oval, to drop a second match in their past three outings.
East Ballarat is now third, with Mt Clear and Wendouree one win ahead.
WENDOUREE opening batsmen Sam Miller and Cole Roscholler were in sensational touch as they put on an unbeaten 170 runs in only 22.2 overs to lead the Red Caps to a crushing 10-wicket victory over North Ballarat, 8-166, at the Northern Oval.
Miller and Roscholler have now had partnerships of 100-plus in the latest three rounds and been instrumental in Wendouree stringing three wins together.
Miller was the dominant player with 108 (15 fours, 2 sixes), while Roscholler made 55 (4 fours, 2 sixes).
Leigh Lorenzen, 45, and Mick Nolan, 37no, ensured North Ballarat had something to bowl at.
Wendouree captain Ryan Simmonds described the performances of Miller and Roscholler as "fantastic".
"They've been very good all season." He said their contributions had been decisive in getting momentum after a shaky start to the campaign.
Simmonds said it certainly gave the side confidence to have Miller and Roscholler in the form they were in.
He also gave plenty of praise to his bowlers in restricting North Ballarat to a total which still had the potential to be tricky chasing down.
He said it had probably been the most consistent bowling effort of the season.
GOLDEN Point, 8-225, also made it three wins on end in thumping a hapless East Ballarat, which was rolled for 93 in only 32 overs.
East Ballarat captain Josh Brown spoke pre-game about about the need for the Hawks' top order to go on with the starts they are getting. On this occasion they struggled to even get a start in the run chase.
Tristan Dixon, 42 (7 fours) and Brad Whittaker, 20, were the only two to get into double figures after East had slumped to 3-5.
Point captain Andrew Warrick did most of the damage with 3-17.
Earlier, Josh White, 71 (7 fours), and Manjula De Zoysa, 47 (2 fours, 2 sixes) were the mainstays with support from Simon Ogilvie, 35 (5 fours), and Sam Younghusband, 24,
MT CLEAR, 117, defeated Buninyong, 8-106, in a match trimmed to 20 overs.
Sent in, Jacob Smith, 41 (3 fours, 2 sixes), played a lone hand early as Mounties stumbled to 6-63.
It took some late cameos from Jack Jeffrey, Ash George and Grant Trevenen is getting into double figures to get what would be just enough runs.
Geordie McLeon was almost a match-winner with 5-10 off four overs for Buninyong.
Buninyong also had trouble early to be 3-12 and 6-37 before Liam Rigby made a a brave 36 (3 fours, 1 six).
NAPOLEONS-Sebastopol, 9-136, had its second win of the season in another match reduced in overs owing a delayed start caused by wet ground conditions at Napoleons.
Naps-Sebas made just enough to hold off Brown Hill, 125, and with the win swap places with the Bulls at the bottom of the ladder.
Captain Dan Scott, 41, top scored for Naps-Sebas.
Viraj Pushpakumara was the best for Brown Hill with 23 and Ryan Knowles made 22.
Napoleons-Sebastopol coach Dan Davies said while it was not the team's best performance of the season, it as pleasing to get a victory.
He said they had played better on two or three occasions when they had lost and the win would be a boost for the group.
Davies said the focus remained on improving and developing as players.
DARLEY, 3-147, had a needed win over Ballarat-Redan, 146, at Alfredton.
Jayden Hayes led the way for the Two Swords with a patient 54, while Madushanka Ekanayaka and Ben Longhurst each claimed three wickets for the Lions.
Darley had to do it hard for a while before Hasitha Wickramasinghe, 48 (4 fours), and Rahmatullah Khwaja, 37 ( 3 fours, 1 six), guided it home.
