AGB director Louise Tegart has called for early career artists, those in their first five to 10 years of practice, to submit proposals for exhibitions in the Backspace gallery in 2022.
"We are one of a small number of regional galleries to have that sort of opportunity and we see it as a key part of our remit to encourage and support regional creativity and be part of the creative ecology within Ballarat that supports artists, both with their professional development and them being able to make a living, and offering them exposure," Ms Tegart explained.
The Backspace gallery has been moved in to the main Art Gallery of Ballarat from a neighbouring building because only about 10 per cent of gallery visitors were venturing across to see the exhibitions there.
"Over the past few months we've been working quite closely with the arts and creative team at the City of Ballarat to define the pathway for artists in Ballarat," she said.
"Emerging artists who might be at their first or second exhibition can apply through Art Space and Unicorn Lane, but we are looking for people taking the next step of their career as artists, people who have had a bit of experience and we offer the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional supported environment with curatorial advice and marketing support."
Gallery staff will help artists successful in gaining an exhibition at Backspace to build their skills in how to approach galleries, how to present their work, fine tuning the objective of the exhibition, presenting a cohesive idea and how to edit their work for the exhibition.

"It's the level that artists at the next tier up are working at," she said. "The idea of professional development is really a key part in this program."
Applicants need to submit a proposal and images online through the gallery website. Submissions close on March 14.
