Continuing from upgrades throughout 2020, the final stage of the project to improve safety for people crossing the road - and in particular children heading to schools in the area or to Victoria Park - is getting under way this week, with speed limits reduced.
No lanes will be closed at peak times to help traffic flow.
When eventually activated, the lights will be the latest along Sturt Street, as part of a state government project to deal with concerns about cars heading north-south - on the other side of Pleasant Street, several intersections have been changed to double U-turns, had traffic lights installed, or closed completely.
The final set of lights to be activated, on Raglan Street, is due to begin working by the end of March, according to Regional Roads Victoria.
Works will continue on the shared path on the southern side of the median gardens, with kerb works under way at Drummond Street.
