After an alert went out just after 5.30pm, officers cordoned off part of the Peel Street car park, close to Grenville Street.
SES volunteers and bomb squad officers assembled a pile of sandbags on one side of the car park close to a park in front of the court house.
A bomb disposal robot was deployed, picking up an item from close to the side of a building and dropping it off on the sandbags, with an officer in full safety gear making final preparations.
The item was then safely detonated on the sandbags, after police urged bystanders to move back and wind down car windows.
Police Media then said the area was declared safe after 7.30pm.

The area was busy as shoppers went to supermarkets after work, before restrictions began.
