Head coach Mark Rudan said it was a positive display by his team despite the result.
"Very good, it was a very good performance, we did everything but score. I think double the amount of shots than the opposition," he said.
"I thought we had the better chances, it is just one of those games where I can't fault the performance from the players, on another day maybe we would've got one or two (goals)."
United's game was thrown off early following an accidental knee to the head of goalkeeper Filip Kurto, who had to be subbed out. Ryan Scott was his replacement.
The one glaring mistake from United came from Jerry Skotadis, who fumbled in his defensive box handing Jordon Mutch the easiest of goals in the 56th minute.
It didn't deter the group of United fans at the Creswick Road end of the ground nor the players, who dominated possession in the second half and managed 23 shots to the Wanderers 13 for the game.
It was not enough however, the Wanderers holding on to take the three points and move to third on the ladder. United leave Ballarat having split their two games here for season 2021 and fall to ninth.
They will now turn their attention to Sydney FC on Wednesday at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium from 7:05pm.
