Bryan Loughnane and co-accused Trevor Scott attended Bunnings Warehouse, Delacombe, in a stolen Toyota Landcruiser at 7.20pm on November 15.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac said Loughnane, 32, entered the store, while Scott waited in the vehicle.
He said Loughnane filled up a trolley with $2164 worth of items, including a saw, angle grinder, wreaking bar and demolition hammer.
Loughnane walked past the point of purchase and did not pay for the items.
Senior Constable Repac said Loughnane was loading the items on the Landcruiser's tray but Scott began to drive away to avoid being caught by staff members.
He said Loughnane was unable to load all of the items onto the ute and only the demolition hammer was taken.
The incident was captured on CCTV.
Loughnane pleaded guilty to nine charges at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. The charges related to the Bunnings theft, two alcohol thefts and family violence which all occurred last year.
Senior Constable Repac said police responded to a triple zero call relating to a family violence incident.
He said Loughnane's mother told police her son had consumed alcohol and became angry at his father.
Loughnane became abusive before tipping over a fridge and hitting a caravan with an axe.
The court was told Loughnane stole two 10-pack cans of Jack Daniels whiskey and cola, worth $47 each, on March 16 and 17, last year, at BWS Stockland Wendouree.
Defence lawyer David Tamanika said his client's prior history was littered with on-going offending because he associated with people who gave him the task of going into businesses to steal items.
He said an outdated report stated Loughnane had an intellectual disability.
Magistrate Torres said she would defer sentence until the relevant reports were available to the court. Loughnane will be assessed for a community corrections order and a justice plan.
Loughnane, who appeared via a video link from prison, was bailed with conditions including to live at a stable address, not to contact Trevor Scott and not to attend licensed premises.
He will return to court on May 27.
