The blue SUV rammed into the Malbec Drive house about 6am, first hitting a car parked in front of the house and pushing it through the garage door before deviating towards the bedroom window.

Michael and Jane* (not her real name) were sound asleep when Jane suddenly woke to the sound of screaming and the car's wheel sitting on her hip.

"I thought it was Michael screaming before I worked out that I was the one screaming because the car was on me, on my hip so that was the biggest moment, I think, and that's what everyone else woke up to," she said.

"It was like being in a movie, watching the movies when the explosions go off and everything just blows into the frame at once. That's what we woke up to."

Michael said his first thought was that Jane might have had a bad dream.

"I thought it was sort of like a dream where she jumped in her sleep so I've jolted as well and next minute, I just woke up to a deafening scream and car sirens going off," he said.

"I'm trying to yell out to Jane to see if she's all right and then I sort of gathered my eyesight, saw a car, smoke and dust. Next minute, I see Jane's all right, she says she's all right and so I've just legged it outside and just started screaming for help from some neighbours and then all these neighbours just started coming out.

"Every single neighbour...while we're trying to do a little bit of clean-up, they were coming and asking 'do we need a hand or anything like that'...a neighbourhood that we don't really know...everyone just came together."

Jane said the couple was still in a state of shock from the incident and suffered a sleepless night running through all the possible scenarios that could have taken place.

"It just blows my mind that everything that could have gone right in that situation went right to save our lives. Otherwise, who knows? It could've gone straight through," she said.

The couple was in the middle of applying for a mortgage to buy the property, which will now take months to repair with windows, walls and door frames now more than an inch from where they once were.

"The door down the hallway, we can't even open it up, it won't even jimmy open. We've got full cracks in our bathroom where you can see the walls have just been warped and moved," Michael said.

"It could take months. We're waiting for builders to come out and actually have an assessment but the surveyors and the people who helped put the boards up said it's safe at the moment.

"Then we get the builders out and see how we go, see if we've got to strip the whole area, straighten up the structure or do they just rebuild the whole area? So financially, we just don't know."

The couple is also receiving support from family and friends, but was thankful that nobody was seriously hurt in the incident.

"We've both had to take work off for our injuries and just everything like that so it's all of that that becomes a factor but in the scheme of things, it's minimal because we're not standing here mourning someone," Jane said.

"We're just glad that [the driver is] alive and the cops didn't have to go knock on somebody else's door to say this has happened and then he also doesn't have to live with the burden of killing someone, that would be awful. I think we're just grateful for that too."
