Turbitt's brace in the 35th and 41st minute allowed the Vikings to escape with a 2-1 win over a Point Cook side which belied its ninth position on the table, taking the game right to the final whistle.
For coach Corey Smith, it was a gradual return to form after a couple of down weeks, which had resulted in a loss and a draw.
"On reflection over 90 minutes we were pretty deserving of the three points," he said.
"We should have put the game to bed a little bit earlier, we had a few opportunities to make it three or four-nil and didn't take it."
Smith said Point Cook turned on the attacking game to try and get back into the match late.
"Point Cook had a 5-10 minutes period where they changed their structure and went very attacking," he said.
"We cleared one off the line, then they scored the goal with only 16 minutes to go.
"From our team perspective we were maybe caught in between defending the lead or going for the winner. We were a little bit confused, but we had our chances, as did they, so it was a deserving win."
Smith said Turbitt was showing his quality.
"When he first came in, I thought he'd be a great signing," he said.
"I think Owen has strength, power, movement and is good in the air and above all he has an attitude to score goals.
"He's starting to really learn the team movements and he's developed really well, he's definitely one for the future and he's proving to be one for the the present."
Top spot will be on the line for the Vikings next week when they host second played Upfield. The two clubs are separated by just two points on the ladder.
