Senior Sergeant Stuart Gale from Ballarat Highway Patrol said there is an increase in road trauma on our roads.
The latest crash happened at Navigators when a sedan and a truck collided head on Navigators Road near the Dunnstown turnoff.
Investigations are continuing into crash which led to man being taken to hospital for treatment. They are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Senior Sgt Gale said "we get sick of seeing the trauma, the impact it has on the community, the persons involved and to emergency services personnel."
"The unfortunate consequence is the human body can only withstand so much trauma and speed is a major factor in that."
As winter is nearly here, the top traffic cop says people need to change their driving to adjust to the new conditions.
"That's the problem, people don't adjust to whether it's raining, fog, low visibility and lighting conditions."
IN OTHER NEWS:
He said motorists should have their lights on during inclement weather as well as from dusk to dawn and ensure their cars are roadworthy.
"They just think they are entitled to do the speed limit where they need to drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions and the environment."
"Most collisions are avoidable."
He said the impact of Covid lockdown had also seen driving skills reduced which is another concern.
"We've been in lockdown for quite an extended period of time, people still aren't driving big distances again and people lose skills by not performing a task so it's a loss of gross motor skills, that situation awareness is a big factor."
Senior Sgt Gale said the frequent message of slow down and drive to the conditions as we move into winter needs to be heard.
"Repeating the same message over and over again becomes very tiresome , when will people wake up and listen?"
