A 71-year-old Alfredton woman died at the scene as a result of the crash.
The woman was driving alone in her car when it collided with a black HSV Senator just before 12pm.
She was pulling out of Arthur Street and the other car was travelling south on Learmonth Street when the collision occurred, according to Ballarat Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Stuart Gale.
Despite the best efforts of emergency workers to keep her alive, she was pronounced dead at the scene about 12.55pm.
The fatality was one of several to happen in the Ballarat area in recent weeks after none were recorded in the first three months of the year.
Senior Sergeant Gale expressed his dismay at the latest tragedy, just one of a number of recent serious crashes on Ballarat roads that have come on National Road Safety Week.
"We've had a number of fatalities in a very short period of time and that is concerning after such a long period with no fatalities," he said.
"The first three months of this year there were no fatalities and I'm seeing a rapid increase in fatalities in this area."
The four occupants of the other car, the driver, two women and a baby were all taken to Ballarat Base hospital with injuries but their condition is not known.
An air ambulance attended but was not required.
Senior Sergeant Gale said police would look at all circumstances around the collision.
"We've got a number of eyewitnesses and I'd certainly appeal to the public if they observed this incident today to come forward and give us their details," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS
The incident follows another serious crash on Ballarat's roads yesterday, when a car collided with a truck in Navigators.
Speaking to The Courier on Wednesday, Senior Sergeant Gale urged people to be more attentive on the roads.
"We get sick of seeing the trauma, the impact it has on the community, the persons involved and to emergency services personnel," he said.
The road was blocked for the majority of Thursday as Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives examined the site.
Any witnesses to the crash or who saw either car before the incident are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
